Past Simple Tense


How do we formulate the Past Simple Tense?

Regular verbs: verb + ed

ex. She cleaned the house.

They watched a football match.

Verbs that end in an - e ( live, dance ) verb + d

ex. I lived here in 2006.

Verbs that end in a- y , preceded by a consonant ( study, spy, cry ) y becomes i

ex. She studied a lot.

Irregular verbs have a unique past form

He built that house last year ( build )

She taught French in 2000 ( teach )

Past Simple in questions

For all verbs ( regular and irregular ) did + verb

ex. Did you sleep last night?

Did she study yesterday?

Past Simple in negations

For all verbs ( regular and irregular ) didn't + verb

ex. I didn't drink coffee this morning.

When do we use Past Simple?

We use the Past Simple Tense for things that happened at a specific time in the past ( this morning, yesterday, last week, in 2000 etc )
