Present Simple Tense
How do we formulate Present Simple?
I play handball
You play
He/ She plays
We play
You play
They play
● Note that for the 3rd person singular ( he, she, it) we use the infinitive form of the verb+ s ( He walks, She talks…)
● 3rd person singular form for verbs that end in a –s sound ( miss, teach, kiss) we use verb+es
( She teaches French )
● finally the 3rd person singular verbs that end in a-y , preceded by a consonant (spy, worry ,fly, envy )
y becomes ie
ex. It worries me a lot.
Present Simple in questions
● 1st and 2nd person singular form:
Do + verb ( Do you speak Italian? )
● All plural forms:
Do + verb ( Do we make the beds ourselves? )
● 3rd person singular form (he, she and it)
Does + verb ( Does she drink coffee every morning? )
Present Simple in negations
● 1st and 2nd person singular form:
Don’t ( do not ) + verb ( I don’t drink tea every morning. )
● All plural forms:
Don’t ( do not ) + verb ( We don’t speak French. )
● 3rd person singular form (he, she and it)
Doesn’t ( does not ) + verb ( She doesn’t cut her hair )
When do we use Present Simple?
- We use Present Simple to indicate:
● facts
ex. I like cats.
I live in Skopje.
● habits
ex. I usually wake up at 7 a.m.
He always drinks tea in the morning.
