Prepositions of time ( In, On, At )

Hi guys!

I wanted to do a nice and easy lesson which is about IN ,

ON and AT- prepositions of time. This is such a simple thing to learn since we have rules that we more or less stick to them and there’s not too many exceptions. The problem is remembering them in the moment when we’re trying to say them. So, I am here to give you the tools and then you have to do the work. :)

So, the first preposition we are going to look at is AT. We normally use this preposition when we are talking about a specific time ( at 6 o’clock, at sunrise, at lunch. ) We can also use it in some expressions ( at night, at the weekend, at the same time, at present. )

  • Note that people in the USA say: “ On the weekend “ whereas people in Britain say :“ At the weekend .“

One final point is that with special holidays and holiday periods, like Christmas or Easter , we use at as well.

ex. What did you do at Christmas ?

The next preposition we are going to look at is IN. We tend to use this preposition for longer periods of time ( months, years, centuries, seasons ) and just periods of time in general ( in the future, in the past.) We also have general periods of the day ( in the morning, in the afternoon. )

● Note that we do have an exception - At night .

The last, but certainly not the least preposition we are going to talk about is ON. We use this preposition for specific dates and specific days (on Friday, on Christmas day, on my birthday )

● Note that the way we say the date is different to how we write the date.

- We write: 10th March.

- We say: On the 10th of March.

● One final note to include is when we use this, next, last or every, we don’t have to include the in, on or at preposition.

ex. - When is your birthday?

- Next May.

I hope that you found this lesson quite useful. You can check your knowledge by doing the exercise down bellow.

Good luck with your use of prepositions!
